Welcome to TEDxBishopsU
At Bishop’s, we believe that universities have a responsibility to offer a balanced and complete experience that challenges our young people and prepares them for responsible, ethical, and sustainable leadership. In fact, we’re so committed to educating our young generation as future leaders that we’re taking a leadership role: through TEDxBishopsU we are initiating a conversation to explore innovative and inspirational ways to teach and learn in the 21st century.
Many Canadian universities are looking for ways to fulfill the mission of delivering a well-rounded experience to students. In response to cutbacks in funding, debt crises, and rising tuition, several institutions have increased undergraduate enrollment rapidly with a specific focus on the “bottom line”, which has drastically diluted the quality of undergraduate education in Canada.
Bishop’s University has been relatively insulated from this wide-spread crisis. While we have grown sustainably, nearly 40% since 2008, we’ve consistently maintained our commitment to the tenets of a liberal education. We want to contribute to the debate about the type of university system that ought to exist in Canada and what type of legacy we can leave for future generations.
We want to explore the complex issues around undergraduate education in a stimulating and thought-provoking environment. Therefore, we’re hosting TEDxBishopsU in February 2013. And, because we believe that collaboration leads to inspiration and innovation, we’ve invited three other universities – Acadia, Mount Allison, and St. Francis Xavier – to join in the conversation.
TEDxBishopsU is a multidisciplinary event that will feature speakers drawn from the talented pool of students, faculty, alumni, community members, and staff from the four universities. Our theme is “Illuminating Education”; each talk will focus on an aspect of education – either inside or outside the classroom – that fostered inspiration, innovation, or a transformative experience.
As Parker Palmer and Arthur Zajonc write, in The Heart of Higher Education (2011), “sometimes good conversations are ends in themselves, good simply because they are enjoyable and edifying. At other times, something stirs in the participants, and larger forms of dialogue and action begin to take shape”.
We hope you join in the conversation on February 9th, 2013!

What is TEDx? In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience.
Our event is called TEDxBishopsU, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxBishopsU event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized.
